If you know anything about Dr. Mike Myers, you know that he is a very active person. He rarely misses an opportunity to train and routinely works out with his F3 group – a free, participant-led boot camp style workout group that focuses on fitness, fellowship and faith. But did you know that he recently participated in the Palmetto 200 – a unique, overnight running adventure that covers 200 scenic miles from the Columbia area to Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant? This race takes “working out” to a whole new level!!
So what exactly is the Palmetto 200? Participants form teams made up of 4 to 12 people who split the race into 36 legs. For instance, each person of a 12 person team will run three legs over distances varying from 4 – 10 miles. Each team provides a support van to drop off and pick up runners at designated exchange points along the 200-mile route.
Dr. Mike participated with a six man team, F3 Charleston Ultra, and ran 39 total miles throughout the race. He personally ran six legs of the race which averaged out to about 6.5 miles per run (the longest leg was 9.77 miles). In-between runs, Dr. Mike refueled in his support van with his teammates while his family waited for him at the finish line.
150 teams participated in the Palmetto 200 and Dr. Mike’s team placed 28th overall and 5th in the ultra division. “This was my third year running the Palmetto 200 and it is a great way to see the Lowcountry and enjoy a unique race with good friends. Having a team race in March keeps me motivated through the winter to stay in shape and prepare for both a physical and mental challenge,” says Dr. Mike. As you can tell, he is always up for a new adventure and enjoys a good challenge.
