****UPDATE 8/11/17 – GIVEAWAY IS COMPLETE. WE ARE OUT OF ECLIPSE GLASSES!****
On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Those along the path of totality will experience a total solar eclipse. We are so excited about this historic event at Kids Teeth that we will be giving away eclipse glasses August 1-15 at both of our Mt. Pleasant locations (read the bottom of the article for further instructions).
What is a total eclipse?
During a Total Solar Eclipse, the disk of the moon appears to completely cover the disk of the sun in the sky. Essentially, the moon moves right in front of the sun, covering it completely for a very short time. The whole sky darkens and you are able to look right at the sun. You must use special solar eclipse viewing glasses whenever the sun isn’t completely eclipsed.
Why is this a significant event?
Various types of eclipses occur four to seven times a year but the last total eclipse happened 40 years ago in 1979 (in the northwest part of the country only). Very few people have ever seen a total solar eclipse and another one won’t occur until 2024.
According to the Emergency Management of South Carolina, emergency managers are planning for an estimated influx of more than one million visitors into South Carolina for several days surrounding the eclipse. Expect delays and nearly everything to be above capacity.
How do I know if I’m on the path?

South Carolina is a significant destination for the eclipse because it will be the nearest spot within the path of totality. Anyone within the path of totality can see a total solar eclipse. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun’s disk.

Are there any local viewing events?
The Charleston Visitor’s Bureau has put together a great list of area viewing events. Check out their website to learn more – CVB viewing events.
I want to learn more….
The Charleston County Library is hosting several events educating residents of all ages about the 2017 solar eclipse at various branch locations or take a moment to watch the video created by NASA.
